From Krakow: In the Footsteps of John Paul II
12 ReviewsThe tour gives you a chance to follow in the footsteps of the man who was to become one of the greatest Popes and human beings in history.
Clinging to a steep hillside, high above the River Vistula, Przegorzaly Castle is home to what must be one of the most spectacular restaurant experiences in Krakow. U Ziyada, named after its owner Ziyad Raoof - a Kurdish Iraqi resident in Krakow since the early 90s - is an elegant restaurant whose outstanding characteristic is its large sweeping summer terrace offering panoramic views over the river, the floodplains beyond, and on a clear day even the Tatra mountains on the Slovakian border.
The menu is predominantly high-class Polish cuisine, but for the more adventurous there is a selection of Kurdish-influenced dishes. If you're a fan of lamb - something not so widely available in Poland - then U Ziyada is the place to go, with several main course choices. A number of vegetarian options, as well as fish dishes, means there is something to suit everyone; and portions are generous. A comprehensive wine list ranges from the affordable to the more exclusive.
By taxi, U Ziyada is about 10 minutes from the city centre, and must be considered a first choice for any occasion when you have guests to impress. For a romantic dinner on a warm summer evening it's unbeatable, with a profusion of flowers decorating the terrace, the vast darkening sky overhead and the quiet of the surrounding countryside. A great location if you're thinking of proposing!
On which subject, U Ziyada is one of the best places to hold a 'wesele', or wedding party, featuring two dining rooms and cafés, with room for 200 guests inside, as well as the terrace. There is plenty of room for dancing, and the restaurant offers a comprehensive and customisable wedding menu that can include such luxuries as a chocolate fountain. Experienced and helpful staff are happy to help with planning and will take care of every detail.
